UCD and University of Stavanger Students in 2006 Summer Abroad Course

The Landscape Architecture Program at UC Davis has an ongoing cooperative and exchange agreement since 2001 with the Urban Design Program at the University of Stavanger, Norway. It includes the following activity:

Joint Teaching and Exchange of Students and Faculty.

  • UCD Study Abroad in Scandinavia. Approximately thirty landscape architecture students visited Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland as part ther UCD Summer Aboard Program in 2004 and 2006. UCD students worked with Norwegian students to redesign several public spaces in the city including NyTorget, the Oil Museum Park, and the Green Promenade.

  • Faculty exchange between UCD (Francis) and University of Stavanger (Tonning, Langeland, Omland) as guest professors at each university during 2001&endash;2008.
  • Student exchange and joint studios including twelve students and two faculty members (Tonning and Omland) from the University of Stavanger visiting UCD in February 2008 to travel and do a joint studio project with UCD students.

Joint Research/Outreach

  • OPUS (Open Public Urban Spaces) Research Project. UCD and UIS faculty are co-directing a joint research project to explore how culture is transforming public space in past and future European Capitals of Culture. This project also involves partners from Aalborg University, Denmark, ABCittà, Milan, Italy, Royal Academy of Architecture, Copenhagen Denmark, Lund University, Sweden, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, The Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, University of Liverpool, UK, Poznan University, Poland, Edinburgh College of Art/Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK, and TU Graz, Austria. The project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council and UCD Office of the Vice Provost for International Programs.
  • Stavanger2008 International Urban Design Symposium. UCD is co-sponsor with University of Stavanger, Stavanger2008 and the National Association of Norwegian Architects. This is an official event as part of the Stavanger's designation as the 2008 European Capital of Culture. UC Davis faculty members Michael Rios and Mark Francis are participating.
