Lecturer SOE Steve McNiel continues to work on issues related to preservation of the cultural landscape through his ongoing efforts on behalf of the USDA Forest Service, for whom he has built a state-wide GIS of historic recreational homes and evaluated thousands of these homes for eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. This summer he will be working in the Sierra Angeles and Tahoe National Forests evaluating Historic Resorts and Cabins. In addition, he will be making a presentation in Wyoming on linear landscape preservation to representatives of the BLM, Forest Service and the National Park Service at a conference and training sessions aimed at preserving the California, Oregon, Mormon Emigrant and Pony Express historic trails.

Following his interests in computer technology, McNiel was on the faculty of the Summer Institute on Teaching Technology on the Davis campus presenting his work on multimedia authoring this summer, and will be presenting a paper at the International Web Conference in Hawaii on the visual data base of landscape architectural subjects that was created for the World Wide Web. This latter project was funded by a USDA Educational Challenge Grant and is a joint project with the Universities of Maryland, Cornell, Oregon, Georgia and Virginia Tech.

Working with Artist and Sculptor, Tom Arie-Donch, Steve has completed the Alameda Skate Park, A Paleontologic Project in Orange County and is completing designs for a 250 acrea park in Wisconsin.
